Any contractor can buy GAF shingles or Owens Corning underlayment off a supply house shelf. What they can’t do, unless the manufacturer has certified them, is offer the warranties that truly protect you. A crew that’s certified through five different manufacturers has sat through factory training on five different systems, year after year, which is a very different level of knowledge than a crew that’s just been nailing down shingles the same way since 2009.
GAF invites only about two percent of roofing contractors in North America into its Master Elite program, and the bar to get there includes years in business, proper licensing, at least a million dollars in liability insurance, and a track record GAF verifies before extending an invitation. Earning it means at least five years in business, half the installation crew holding individual Master Shingle Applicator certification, and the owner passing a fiscal responsibility review. Owens Corning doesn’t let contractors sign up for its top tier. Its Platinum Preferred designation is invitation-only and granted after a regional sales manager has observed a contractor consistently perform in installation quality, customer satisfaction, and business stability over time. Platinum Preferred unlocks the Platinum Protection warranty: fifty-year material coverage, twenty-five years of workmanship coverage, wind resistance coverage up to 130 miles per hour, and the workmanship guarantee survives even if the contractor closes shop, because Owens Corning backs it directly.
IKO’s Shield Pro Plus certification is built around one thing homeowners care about most: how long the warranty stays at full value. Most roofing warranties start prorating after five or ten years, meaning the manufacturer pays less and less of a claim as the roof ages. IKO’s certified program offers 15 years of non-prorated, lifetime coverage at full replacement cost with no depreciation, plus options to extend that window further. Certified IKO contractors also include tear-off and recycling of the old roof in the warranty terms, a cost that catches a lot of homeowners off guard when it isn’t covered.
Not every roof in your neighborhood is asphalt shingles, and Westlake Royal is who we turn to for concrete tile, clay tile, slate, and lightweight composite roofing systems. Westlake runs its installers through hands-on technical training on the specific handling, flashing, and fastening details these heavier, longer-lasting materials require, details that are easy to get wrong if a crew’s experience is mostly limited to standard shingles. Certification includes a full seminar and a written exam covering seasonal installation differences, structural load considerations, and the details around penetrations, vents, and snow guards that determine whether a metal roof stays watertight for 40 years or starts leaking in year 3. Certified Englert installers can also offer customers a weathertightness warranty that uncertified installers simply cannot provide.
Metal Alliance’s certified installer program is newer than some of the others on this list, but the standards are not lighter. Installers need at least 3 years of standing-seam metal roofing experience, documented references from recent projects, and a 4-star-or-better customer rating before they’re accepted. Certification gives us access to pre-tested, code-compliant panel systems and exclusive weathertight warranty options, along with ongoing technical training as metal roofing products and code requirements evolve.
None of these certifications is something we paid for and forgot about. The shingle is the same either way. The difference is the warranty you can access. Buy GAF shingles from any contractor, and you typically get material-defect coverage only. Hire a Master Elite contractor, and you can get the Golden Pledge warranty, which adds twenty-five years of workmanship coverage on top of fifty-year material coverage. Do these certifications cost me anything extra?
